6 Days Mt Kenya via Chogoria Traverse Sirimom/Naromoru Routes

Hiking Mount Kenya along Chogoria route is the most rewarding in terms of scenery giving you an enjoyable & relaxed experience. Trekking in 6 days will give you ample time to acclimatize and local exploring to Nithi Waterfalls, lake Ellis, Hall tarns, the Temple among other scenic landscapes.

The program is not tailored for children as it does not have many walking hours per day.

Day To Day Plan

Day 1 : Nairobi – Mt Kenya Anabas lodge (2,950m)

Altitude Gain from Nairobi; 1,150m

Hiking distance; 7km in 2 hours

Vegetation; Bamboo Forest

Meal Plan; Lunch & Dinner

Accommodation at Anabas lodge.

 

Leave Nairobi early as 7am, board your vehicle driving towards the north side of Kenya reaching Chogoria in 4 hrs. Have lunch, meet your climbing crew (porters and guides) at this town and board a 4×4 altogether proceed driving to Mount Kenya Chogoria forest passing by the government formalities check till clearance point where hiking starts.

DAY 2:Anabas lodge – Lake Ellis (3,450m)

Altitude Gain; 500m

Hiking distance; 11km in 3-4 hours

Vegetation; Alpine short bushes

Meal Plan; Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Accommodation at Lake Ellis campsite.

 

After breakfast and packing, leave camp towards lake Ellis but via a detour to Nithi waterfalls. Packed lunch will be served and water to ensuring an action-packed experience.

Day 3:Lake Ellis– Mintos/Lake Michaelson (4,300m/3,800m)

Hiking Distance; 9km

Vegetation; Alpine moorland and giant heather

Accommodation type; Quality Mountain tents with mattress

 

After having breakfast and packing, leave the camp trekking up a steep and moderate elevation reaching to Mintos hut in 6-7hrs. Make sure when leaving the camp, you have enough water. In the afternoon explore around the Camp. Lunch will have been packed for you.

Whilst at the camp, make local explorations to the temple and Gorges valley view. Dinner and overnight at the Camp.

Day 4Mintos/Lake Michaelson – Austrian Hut (4,790m)

Vegetation; Giant Heather and bare rocks

Accommodation type; Austrian Hut with Bank beds

 

After breakfast and packing, leave camp hiking along the gentle trail about an hour to the start of steeper scree reaching tooth col in another hour. From here you’ll be rewarded with scenic views of Hide valley, Thompson and Gallery tarns. Continue hiking another hour reaching Austrian Hut in time for lunch. In the afternoon local explore around camp and to lewis glacier. Lunch, dinner and overnight inside the hut.

Day 5Austrian Hut – Summit Attempt (4,985m) – Met Station/Old Moses Camp (3,300m)

Altitude Drop; 1,685m

Vegetation; Alpine Bush

Accommodation type; Quality Mountain tents with mattress

 

 

Wake up at around 0400 hrs, pack your bags and have a simple breakfast. (Only tea, coffee or chocolate served with biscuits) Start hiking in the dark reaching to the summit in 1 hour. At the summit take photos enjoying the sunrise. When the views are very clear, Kilimanjaro is visible. Start descending via Sirimon route reaching Shiptons hut for full breakfast and rest. After resting, commence back to hiking down along the wide Mackinders valley reaching Old Moses Camp (3,300m) in 5-6 hours.

Day 6Met Station/Old Moses Camp - Nairobi

Altitude drops to Nairobi; 1,685m

Hiking distance; 9km in 2 hours

Vegetation; Bamboo & Rain Forests

Meal Plan; Breakfast

 

Have breakfast around 8am, start trekking down the paved road with high chances of spotting wildlife reaching exit in 2hrs. Board your ride back to Nairobi or onward destination.
