Mt Kenya & Mt Kilimanjaro Gears Checklist

PRIMARY GEARS & CLOTHING

NB: Quick drying fabrics wool or synthetic, avoid cotton as it’s a poor insulation when wet.

  • Pair of Waterproof Hiking boots (use tried and tested ones to avoid blisters)
  • 3-4 Pairs of Hiking socks, thick and thin
  • 1 Pair of Gaiters – keeps mud and sand pebbles from your boots.
  • Pair of Adjustable hiking sticks
  • Pair of Sneakers/Sandals (to wear around camp)
  • 2-3 Pair of long top and bottom thermal underwear
  • 1-2 Pair of Hiking pants (detachable)
  • Pair of warmer summit pants (fleece-like pants)
  • Pair of waterproof pants
  • 1 Pair of waterproof/windproof Jacket/Poncho
  • 3-4 T-shirts (Short & Long sleeve)
  • Long sleeve fleece pullover/jacket
  • Down/Puffer jacket with hood
  • Pair of inner (fleece) and outer (waterproof) gloves
  • Marvin/Balaclava
  • Neck buff/scarf
  • Sleeping bag rated -10° or 4 seasons
  • 35–45-liter Day pack – for carrying personal gear such as water.
  • 65–75-liter Rucksack/Duffel bag max 15-18kg (to be carried by the porter)

FOOD & WATER

  • Personal Snacks (Sugary-for quick energy, Carby-for longer burn energy, Salty and Savory like nuts, jerky & Fruits)
  • 3-liter Camelback or Reusable water bottle(s)
  • Water purifiers (though our Mountain Chefs do provide Boiled water)

EMERGENCY ESSENTIALS

  • Headlamp/Flashlight
  • First Aid kit
  • Dry bags with zipper
  • Cellphone (with strategy and waterproof case)
  • Extra batteries

CAMP BATHROOM

  • Toilet paper
  • Small Towel
  • Biodegradable soap
  • Toothbrush and biodegradable toothpaste
  • Hand Sanitizer
  • Feminine products
  • Plastic bags (for used products)

SUN PROTECTION

  • Sunscreen (SPF minimum 30)
  • Lip balm (SPF minimum 20)
  • Sun hat
  • Sunglasses

OTHER ESSENTIALS

  • Adventurous Spirit
  • Valid passport/ID
  • Keys, license, credit card, and some cash
  • Power banks
  • Ear plugs
  • Camera
  • Hot water bottles for cold nights
  • Watch
  • Whistle
  • Trip itinerary (left with a friend)
  • Strips of duct tape (for minor repairs)
  • Hand and feet warmers
  • Stuff sack (put a jacket in it at night and it becomes a pillow)
