10 Days Mt. Kilimanjaro Trekking & Tanzania Safari

In this program,we outfit the best of Tanzania has to offer and showcase her beauty and life. Start by a Kilimanjaro trekking up Machame route which is popularly known as “Whisky Route” though no whisky is provided. This route is indeed a bit difficult climb but it does have much higher success rates. Choosing a seven days itinerary gives your body time to acclimatise and recover with altitude with ease.

Combination of this hike with wildlife safari to Tarangire, Ngorongoro and Lake Manyara national parks is a great way to experience Tanzania. The concentration of wildlife in these three parks offers great opportunities to see lots of wildlife in a very short period of time. Here is a 7 days Kilimanjaro trekking and 3 days wildlife safari itinerary starting from Moshi hotel and back.

Itinerary

Day 1:Machame Gate [1,800m] – Machame Camp [2,835m]

The drive from Moshi town to Machame gate takes about 50 minutes passing the Machame village which is located in the lower slopes of the mountain. Meet the rest of your team [porters], Check in the park gate and start trekking through tropical rain forest reaching Machame Camp in 5-6 hours. Lunch will have been packed for you.

Dinner and Overnight at the Camp.
Hiking distance ; 11 km.

Day 2:Machame Camp – Shira Camp [3,800m /12,500ft]

After having breakfast, we leave the glades of the rain forest crossing a little valley walking along a steep rocky ridge. The route then turns to the west reaching Shira Camp in 4-6 hours. Lunch we will be provided in a half way distance.

Dinner and overnight at the camp.
Hiking distance; 5 km.

Day 3: Shira Camp – Barranco Camp [3,950m/13,000ft]

From the Shira plateau, we continue to the east up a ridge passing the junction towards the peak of Kibo. Continue trekking towards South East via Lava Tower (4,600m). Have lunch from this point and continue down to Barranco Camp.

Dinner and Overnight at the Camp.
Hiking Distance; 10 km in 6-8 hours.

Day 4:Barranco Camp – Karanga Camp {3,985m}

After breakfast, leave the Camp and climb a non- technical but steep ridge{Barranco wall/Kissing rock}. Continue trekking in a series of hills reaching Karanga camp around noon.

Dinner and overnight at the camp.
Hiking Distance; 5 km in 4-5 hours.

Day 5:Karanga Camp –Barafu Camp [4,600m /15,300ft]

Right after breakfast and gearing up, start trekking passing the junction to Mweka trail continuing up to the Barafu Camp. From this camp, Mawenzi peak and the Kibo peak are very visible. Have an early dinner and resting ahead of the summit.

Hiking distance; 4 km in 4 -5 hours.

Day 6:Barafu Camp – Mweka Hut [10,000ft]

Wake up at around 2300 hours, have a simple breakfast, gear up and start the journey to the summit in the dark. This is the most challenging part in our bodies both mentally and physically. Walk at a pace of your own step after the other not competing with other hikers or teammates. We say“ Pole Pole” in Swahili language meaning slow but sure.

While at Stella point [18,600ft], you will be rewarded by the epic sunrise if the weather is clear. Then continue in about an hour along the crater rim to the summit. At this point, Uhuru peak [5,895 m/19,340 ft], you are now on the highest point of Mount Kilimanjaro and continent of Africa.
Spend a short time at the summit taking photos and start descending down to Barafu Camp for lunch and a short rest. Afterwards then continue trekking down to Mweka Camp. Enjoy the last dinner on the mountain and a well earned sleep.

Hiking ascent distance from Barafu to Summit; 5 km in 6-7 hours.
Hiking descent distance from summit to Mweka; 12 km 6 hours.

Day 7:Mweka Camp –Mweka Gate [5,400ft ] - Moshi Town

After the breakfast and a little celebration, pick up your day packs and start descending down On arriving at the gate, you’ll be rewarded with certificates of achievement. Board a vehicle which will drive you back in your hotel in Moshi for a shower and Kilimanjaro beer.

Day 8:Moshi - Tarangire Safari

After a well earned sleep and taking breakfast, board a 4×4 safari Land cruiser heading out for Tarangire national park. This park is famous for its large collection of Baobab trees, spectacular large and small mammals and variety of bird species. The park holds the largest concentration of African elephants.
Picnic lunch will provided in the park. After game drive, transfer to your Camp/ Lodge. Dinner and overnight at your Camp.

Day 9:Ngorongoro Crater

Have an early breakfast leaving your camp around 06:00 am. The national park is not only the unbroken Caldera in the whole world but is also among the new 7 natural wonders of the Africa. Ngorongoro national park holds every kind of wildlife, name it and its in here among many bird species. Picnic lunch will be provided inside the park at Hippo pool picnic site.
After a late afternoon game drive, transfer back to your Camp/ Lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 10:Lake Manyara - Moshi/Arusha Town.

Leave your camp around 06:30 am for lake Manyara. This park is renowned for its elusive tree climbing lions, large concentration of baboons, bird life among many predators around the beautiful lake. Later transfer back to Arusha or Moshi Hotel.
