4 Days Mt Kenya Trekking: Chogoria Transverse Sirimon Route

Chogoria route is the most beautiful trekking route on Mt Kenya with spectacular landscapes and exotic flora and fauna. Tackling Mount Kenya in 4 days you don’t need to be a super athlete but at least have previous high altitude hiking experience.
I won’t recommend this program to first time hikers, old or unfit persons as it might be too intense on them as it involves gaining lot of high altidude on a very short period. Chogoria route is an exclusively camping in tents. Here is an itinerary starting from Nairobi and back in 4 days 3 nights.

Leave from your pick up hotel or residence on an early morning and drive via the great northern highway arriving Chogoria town in 4 hours. It is from this place you willl meet the rest of your climbing crew (porters) and proceed with the driving through thick rain forest for about 1 hour. Check in the park and all the formalities involved, note that the park entrance fees are only payable via Mpesa or credit card. Have lunch and start trekking through rush forests passing the magnificent Nithi waterfalls proceeding to lake Ellis. Dinner and overnight at your campsite.

Day 2:Lake Ellis – Mintos Hut (4,300m).

After having breakfast, leave the camp trekking along a single trail through alpine and moorland vegetation. The trek between the two camps is a no water fetching point, ensure you have enough water about 3 litres from Nithi river. Lunch will have been packed for you. While at Mintos camp, you will explore around the camp to the temple and magnificent gorges valley views and of of lake Michaelson. Dinner and overnight at your campsite.

Day 3:Mintos Hut - Summit (4,985m) – Old Moses Camp

Wake up at 0200 hours, have a simple breakfast and hit the trail in the dark for the summit catching up with sunrise on time. At the Summit, this is the most breathtaking moment and unforgettable experience of all. On a very clear day, Mt Kilimanjaro is visible at a far distance. After taking some photos, hike down via Sirimon route passing Shiptons Camp (4,200m) for full breakfast.
After breakfast, leave the camp trekking down along the Mackinders valley reaching Old Moses camp (3,300 m) in 6 hours.

On this final day, leave the camp trekking down on a paved road through the rush forest with high chances of spotting wild animals reaching Sirimon park gate in 2 hours. Check out the park and board on your waiting vehicle back to Nairobi or onward destination.
