5 Days Mt Kenya Hiking: Sirimon Route

Ascending Mount Kenya via Sirimon route is on the drier side and offering easy access trail reaching Shiptons base camp. This is the popular and recommended route as it allows an acclimatisation or resting on third day at 4,200m ahead of summiting. With a mountain huts option, you will have a hot shower and a bonfire at Mount Kenya lodge last night on the mountain. Here a sample of the itinerary starting from Nairobi and back.

Itinerary

Day 1:Nairobi – Nanyuki – Old Moses Camp (3,300m).

Leave from your pick hotel or residence around 8.00 am and drive along the great northern highway of Kenya passing the central highlands to plain fields arriving Nanyuki town in 4 hours. Make your final snack shopping from this town, meet the rest of your climbing crew (porters) and continue driving to Mount Kenya Sirimon gate for another 45 minutes. Have lunch, check in the park and start your hiking along a paved road through rain forest with high chances of spotting wildlife. Arrive to Old Moses camp in 3 hours.

Dinner and Overnight at the camp.
Altitude gain from Nairobi; 1,500m.

Day 2:Old Moses Camp – Shiptons Camp (4,200m).

After having breakfast, leave the camp trekking along a single trail through alpine and moorland vegetation crossing Ontulili, Likii and Mackinders valleys arriving to Shiptons camp in 6–7 hours. Lunch will have been packed for you.
Dinner and overnight at Shiptons.
Altitude gain; 900m.

Day 3:Acclimatization Day.

It is on this day after taking a late breakfast, you will take a short hike to Hausberg col at (4,600m) in 3 hours to acclimatize with altitude and resting ahead of the summit. Breakfast, lunch, dinner and overnight at Shiptons camp.
Altitude gain – 400m.

Day 4:Shiptons Camp – Summit – Mt Kenya Lodge / Campsite (2,900m).

Wake up at around 0200 hours ,take a simple breakfast and hit the trail in the dark reaching to the summit Point Lenana in 3 hours. While at the summit you will be rewarded with a spectacular African Sunrise and 360° magical views. Mt Kilimanjaro is visible at a distance when the weather is clear. After taking some photos, hike down towards Chogoria route via Mintos hut for full breakfast and continuing hiking down over the Gorges valley ridge reaching to Road head campsite for lunch. After lunch continue to Mount Kenya Meru lodge for a well earned sleep.
Dinner and overnight at the camp.
Hiking time from Summit to last camp 8 – 10 hours.
Altitude gain; 795m, Altitude drop; 2,035m.

Day 5:Mount Kenya Lodge / Campsite – Nairobi

After having breakfast, leave the lodge and check out of the park gate and proceed hiking down through bamboo forests for 2 hours. Board a vehicle taking you down through the rain forest reaching Chogoria town. From here connect with another vehicle taking you back to Nairobi or your onward destination.
