5 Days Mt. Kilimanjaro Climbing: Marangu Route

0

This route is also known as the “Coca Cola” or “touristy” route. It is the easiest and direct route to the summit. This is also the only route on Kilimanjaro that offers sleeping huts with comfortable beds. Here is a sample of a 5 days itinerary starting from Moshi town and back. Note there is no enough acclimatisation time on this program, I will not recommend this program to hikers with less high altitude hiking experience.

Itinerary

At 9.00 am, be picked from the hotel and drive to Marangu gate then start walk through a thick rain forest which takes 4 hours to Mandara Hut at 2,740m for dinner and overnight.

Hiking distance 7km in 4 – 5 hours.
Altitude gain from Moshi town; 1,790m.

Day 2:Mandara Hut - Horombo Hut (3,700m)

After breakfast proceed walk slowly following a trek through the forest and then through the alpine bush to Horombo Hut for dinner and overnight.

Hiking time, 6 – 8 hours.
Altitude gain; 960m.

Day 3:Horombo Hut - Kibo Hut (4,600m)

Right after breakfast and packing, leave the camp following the rocky trail but not steep reaching Kibo Hut at 4,600m in 5 – 6 hours crossing the barren sub-Alpine terrain of the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. Needed to relax on arrival as the next stage begins shortly that night.

Altitude gain; 1,000m.

Day 4:Kibo Hut - Summit - Horombo Hut

Wake up at around 2300 hours, have a some tea and a snack getting ready to start this final ascent. With your head torches on, follow the zig zag trail up on scree stopping frequently to catch your breath in this thin air. This is the steepest and most demanding section of the climb, five hours to Gillmans point at 5,681m. It is from this point you will be rewarded with a spectacular African Sunrise over the Mwawenzi peak. Then walk further 45 minutes around the crater and up to the highest point Uhuru peak (5,895m) the summit of Africa. Enjoy here for some minutes taking photos and make your descent down to Kibo for breakfast and lunch. After relaxing continue with the descent to Horombo Hut (3,720m) for overnight.

Hiking ascent distance, 4 km in 7-8 hours.
Hiking descent 4 hours to Kibo camp.
Altitude gain; 1,195m, altitude drop; 2,175m.

Day 5:Horombo Hut- Marangu Gate - Moshi Town

It is much easier day as we have luxury of walking downhill on the way but stay alert that the path may be slippery through the forest. After finishing you will be rewarded with certificates of achievement. Later board your waiting vehicle for transfer to your Hotel in Moshi town for a well earned sleep.

Hiking distance 19 km in 6 -7 hours.
Altitude drop; 2,770m.

END OF THE TRIP.
