6 Days Mt Kenya Trekking: Transverse Naromoru Route

Trekking Mt Kenya up Chogoria route gives you a good sense of hiking adventure as the trails takes you through most of the breathtaking sceneries and campsites like Lake Ellis and Lake Michaelson. Hiking in 6 days helps in acclimatization to high altitudes hence high chances to summit. Spending a night at Australian Hut (4,790m) or Upper Simba Camp also makes it easier and short distance to the Summit. Here is a program starting from Nairobi and back via Chogoria down Naromoru route.

Itinerary

Day 1:Nairobi - Mount Kenya Bandas/Campsite (2,950m).

Pick up from your hotel or residence in Nairobi at on an early morning driving towards the eastern parts of Kenya arriving Chogoria village in 4 hours for lunch. It is from this town you will meet up with the rest of your team(porters). After lunch, board back your vehicle driving through the rain forest to Clearance point where the hiking starts. You will hike for 7km through the giant African bamboo forests along the dirt road for 2 hours reaching Mount Kenya Bandas/Campsite for dinner and overnight.

Altitude gain from Nairobi; 1,155m.

Day 2:Mount Kenya Bandas/Campsite - Lake Eliss (3,400m)

After breakfast follow the track through giant heather and lush forest passing old Urumandi Hut proceeding to Nithi water falls up to Road head Campsite for lunch and later to Lake Ellis. Hiking time 5 hours. In the afternoon you have best chance to local explore around the largest lake on Mt Kenya. Dinner and Overnight your Camp.

Altitude gain; 450m.

Day 3:Lake Ellis - Mintos Hut/Hall Tarns (4,300m).

After breakfast follow the trail through giant heather and alpine vegetation looping over the beautiful and magnificent Gorges valley continuing to Mintos in mid afternoon. In between the two camps is a no water fetching zone, ensure you have enough about 2.5 – 3 litres each person. Lunch will have been packed for you. In the afternoon explore around the camp to the temple with great views of Lake Michaelson. Dinner and overnight at the Camp. Hiking distance; 6-7 hours.

Altitude gain; 850m.

Day 4: Mintos Hut - Austrian Hut (4,790m).

Leave shortly after breakfast hiking along almost flat terrain in about an hour to a steep ascent making a loop at Tooth Col. Reach Austrian Hut in the afternoon. From this camp you will be able to closely see the last remaining of Lewis Glacier and South-east side of Nelion peak. Lunch, dinner and overnight at Austrian.

Hiking time 5 – 6 hours. Altitude gain; 490m.

Day 5:Austrian Hut - Summit (4,985m) - Met Station (3,300m).

Wake up at 0430 hours, take a simple breakfast and start hiking in the dark to Lenana Peak. Most of this hike to the summit is scrambling making holds on the via ferrata in place. From the Summit, you will experience unforgettable moments and the spectacular African Sunrise. If the skies are clear, Mt Kilimanjaro is visible at a far distance. After taking photos, descend to Austrian Hut for full breakfast. Commence hiking down the steep scree surface trail passing Mackinders Camp continuing along the wide Teleki valley with a section of vertical bogs reaching Met Station cottages in the late afternoon. Hiking time 6 – 7 hours. Dinner and overnight at the Camp.

Altitude gain; 195m, altitude drop; 1,685m.

Day 6:Met Station - Naromoru Park Gate (2,600m).

After breakfast and a small celebration for a well earned trip, leave the camp hiking down along the paved road through the rain forests with high chances of spotting wildlife. Reach at the gate in 2 hours, check out of the park and board your vehicle back to Nairobi or onward destination.
