8 Days Mt Kenya Rock Climbing: Batian Peak

Batian peak is the highest summit on Mount Kenya at 5,199m (17,057 ft). The North Face side standard route tackling the peak it is in condition from June – October from Shiptons Hut [4,200m] or Kami Campsite [4,500m] base camps.

The rocks hold granite rock which runs vertically and horizontally with weathered fissures but they offer good holds and friction. Helmets are recommended. Although the guide leads, it is important to have good belay skills when following and be familiar with all types of belay devices. Controlling the risks and hazards relies highly on your skills and experience as well of those of the guide.

One rock climbs Batian peak in 2-3 days which are additional from the normal hiking itineraries from base camps. Adding more days is possible regarding that the weather changes.

The start Grade is IV+ and the first two pitches of the climb are easy for scrambling then Grade III, Grade IV to get to amphitheatre. From there is an easy walk reaching Firming Tower continuing up on a quite tricky about Grade V in a small gully not enough to fit in coming to a knife edge doing Grade IV+ and another Grade IV reaching Shiptons notch. From here, the rocks are lose thus more careful is needed. After Shiptons notch, you are now at Batian Peak 5,199 m.

This climb involves 21-23 solo pitches in one long day 11-13 hours to complete. Coming down, participants would need to be familiar with leading long abseils and putting in safe protections.

Itinerary

Day 1:Nairobi – Old Moses Camp (3,300m).

Leave Nairobi at 8:00 am for drive to Nanyuki, which normally takes 4 hours. Then proceed to Mt Kenya National Park Sirimon gate at 2,600m. After a picnic lunch, we follow the paved road through the Rain forest with chances of spotting wildlife for a of distance of 9 km in 3 hours to Old Moses camp. Dinner and overnight at the camp.

Day 2:Old Moses Camp - Likii North (3,993m).

Depart camp at 8:00 am, following a single trail through alpine bushes to moorland vegetation till the crest of the ridge between the Otulili and Liki North Valleys. A walk of 3 to 4 hours gets you to Liki North hut at 3,993 m. Dinner and overnight at the camp.

Day 3:Likii Camp - Shipton’s Camp (4,200m).

After breakfast, ascend the west side of the valley, over a ridge where will get stunning views of Batian peaks, then down into the Mackinder Valley to meet the direct route to Shiptons taking 4 – 5 hours. Dinner and overnight at the camp.

Day 4:Shiptons Camp/ Kami Hut (Attempting Batian).

This day gives you ample time to acclimatize and also looking after the weather regarding it changes. Ascend to base of Batian, normally taking 2 hours. Attempt climbing and back to Shiptons or Kami Hut base camps.. Dinner and overnight at the camp.

Day 5:Base Camp - Firmin Tower

Arise early, usually between 4 and 5 am, have simple breakfast and then leave at 5:30 for the base of North Face. This section is rocky and frozen scree. The starting Grade is IV+. The first two pitches are easy for scrambling; another Grade III, then Grade II and a Grade IV to get to the amphitheatre, it is easy donkey walk to the base of Firmin Tower. Spend a night at Firmin Tower.

Day 6: Firmins Tower - Summit Batian (5,199m) - Base Camp.

From Firmin tower, two routes emerge here; one route up the Tower is quite tricky and about Grade V in a small gully, the other is around the tower, easier but longer.
After that, you emerge to the knife edge doing Grade IV+ pitch and another Grade IV pitch before you come to a traverse that leads you to the Shipton’s notch. Rocks are quite loose and need to be handled with care. After Shipton’s notch, you will then reach Batian at 5,199 m ( Highest point in Kenya and Second highest point in African continent). After summiting and taking photos, then abseil down doing a lot of down climbing to the base continuing to Shiptons Camp for dinner and overnight.

Day 7:Shiptons Camp - Mt Kenya Lodge (2,950m).

After breakfast at 0600 hours, leave the camp with a climb up Simba Col, then down passing Mintos Hut following the scenic Gorges valley. Have lunch at Road head campsite continuing to your last camp( Mt Kenya lodge) for hot shower and a well earned sleep. The hike takes about 7 hours.

Day 8:Mt Kenya Lodge - Nairobi

After morning breakfast, continue walking down through the bamboo and indigenous rain forest to Clearance point, meet up with your transport back to Nairobi or onward destination. END OF THE TRIP.
