8 Days Mt. Kilimanjaro Climbing: Lemosho Route

This route approaches Kilimanjaro from the west and then joins the Machame route to the east. In the first two days, this route takes you through remote wilderness with chances of seeing wildlife. Taking an itinerary of 8 days gives you easy walking and ample time to acclimatize. Here is a sample of the itinerary.

Itinerary

Day 1:Londorossi Gate [2,100m] – Forest Camp [2,750m]

Depart from Moshi for the Londorossi gate taking 4 hours. Then continue driving to Lemosho trailhead in another one hour. Have lunch, then commence Hiking through the forest winding up to the first camp.
Hiking Distance; 6km in 3-4 hours.

Altitude gain from Moshi town; 1800m

Day 2:Forest Camp – Shira1 Camp [3,540m]

After having breakfast, start trekking into a savanna of tall grass and rocky volcanic rocks draped with lichen beards reaching Shira 1Camp. The view of Kibo across the plateau is amazing. Hiking Distance; 8km in 5 – 6 hours.

Altitude gain; 790m.

Day 3:Shira 1 Camp – Shira 2 - Moir Hut [4,141m]

In this whole day, we’ll be exploring the Shira plateau walking east towards Kibo glaciated peak. Shira plateau is one of the highest plateaus on earth.

Hiking Distance ; 14 km in 6 -7 hours.
Altitude gain; 574m.

Day 4:Moir Hut – Lava Tower –Barranco Camp [3,950m]

Leave the camp continuing with the trekking to the east up ridge, passing the junction towards the peak of Kibo. We continue our direction changing to South East towards Lava tower at 4600m. Have Lunch from this point and continue down to the Barranco Camp for overnight and dinner. This day is very important for acclimatization ahead of summit as it involves hiking on high and sleeping on low altitude.

Hiking Distance ; 7km in 5 – 6 hours.
Altitude gain; 486m.
Altitude drop; 650m.

Day 5:Day 5; Barranco Camp – Karanga Camp (3,995m)

After breakfast, we leave Barranco camp tackling the great non technical Barranco wall. Continue with the trekking crossing some series of hills reaching Karanga camp for lunch in 4 hours. From this camp, you will have ample time to acclimatize to high altitude ahead of rest high altitudes.

Dinner and overnight at the camp.
Hiking distance; 5km.
Altitude gain; 45 m.

Day 6:Karanga Camp - Barafu Camp (4,703m)

After having breakfast and packing, start trekking along the slope reaching Barafu Camp in 3-4 hours. By reaching this camp early, you will have time to sleep before the tough task awaiting before midnight.

Hiking distance; 4 km.
Altitude gain; 708m.

Day 7:Barafu Camp – Summit [Uhuru Peak 5,895m ] – Mweka Camp

Wake up at around midnight, have a simple breakfast and start the most challenging part of the climb. Before you get to Stella point [18600ft] you will be rewarded by a spectacular African sunrise. From point Stella, it is only an hour left to the Summit.
At Uhuru peak, you have reached the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and on continent of Africa (5895m). Take some photos and descend down to Mweka Hut, stopping at Barafu Camp for lunch. After lunch the distance to Mweka Camp is more demanding in energy and tiring as result from exhaustion. At Mweka camp we have our last dinner on the mountain and a well earned sleep.

Hiking Distance; 5km ascent and 12 km decent.
Hiking time; 7-8 hours ascent and 6 hours descent.
Altitude gain; 1,112m
Altitude drop; 2,795m.

Day 8:Mweka Camp (3,100m) – Mweka Gate (1,980m) – Moshi Town

Leave the camp descending the steep downhill (watch your steps as the trail is slippery) to Mweka gate, Check out of the park gate and be given certificates of achievement. Then board your vehicle taking you through the Mweka village reaching Moshi town in your hotel or onward destination.

Hiking Distance; 10 km in 3-4 hours.
Altitude drop; 2,150m.
